Welcome to our second week of the Faces of Figtree, where we meet someone new each week from one of your favourite Figtree Grove retailers.
This week we chat with Chris Taylor, the owner and manager of Wendy’s Milk Bar. Anyone who frequents Wendy’s, whether it be for their delicious ice cream or a tasty hot dog, would know that Chris sure loves a yarn. We’re also thrilled to announce that Chris and the team will be back in store and trading from Saturday 13 June!
Tell us about your journey as a part of Wendy’s Milk Bar.
After careers across tennis coaching, working at the Star Casino and State Rail I was lured by the appeal of owning and operating my own small business in 2017 when I bought Wendy’s Figtree.
From that time, I have built the store up from the usual product lines and customer base to one of the best performers in the State with a wide range of yummy delights. Being your own boss has its rewards but also its challenges. All of which I appreciate as it has helped me develop my skills over many areas including creating our fabulous cakes. Check @wendysfigtree on Instagram to see what we can offer.
What products or services do you offer?
We have a huge range to offer including hot dogs, crispy chips, toasties, freshly made donuts, hot coffee, iced coffees, milkshakes, thickshakes, smoothies and 20 flavours of delicious ice cream. And of course, our creative ice cream cakes, which have earned themselves a bit of a reputation in the Figtree area.
We are also on Uber Eats if you can't get down to the store.
What’s a customer favourite?
Our customers love our thickshakes but a definite favourite has to be the legendary shake and dog combo. A thickshake made with chocolate fudge, malt and topped with chocolate flake, and a delicious hot dog with all the trimmings. (And just remember, we don’t call them calories at Wendy’s, we call them Yum Points!)
What do you do/sell that customers may not know about?
Customers probably don't realise that we sell a large range of hot food besides the hot dog variations we are known for, including chips, hash browns, toasties and pies. We also recently introduced hot cinnamon donuts made fresh to order.
What has been a highlight for your store at Figtree Grove?
Becoming part of the retailer team at Figtree Grove has been an absolute highlight for me personally. Another highlight is the fabulous people I have met through conducting my business and great relationships I have built with loyal customers who come back week after week for their regular orders.
Tell us about your team.
I have a great team of enthusiastic and fun people ranging in age from school kids to uni students. Some of my team had worked for the previous Wendy’s owners and showed me a few tricks and tips when I started out. They have all moved on now and my current team work with me to continually improve our product range and customer service practices.
What’s the key to success in retail?
Maintaining a positive outlook and a friendly disposition is certainly at the top of my list.
When you’re not in the store, where might be find you, or what might you be doing in your down time?
When I am not in store I am at home fixing things or out getting some fresh air along the various coastal areas and more recently through some of the escarpment bushwalks which I discovered during isolation.
Thanks to Chris for taking the time to chat with us this week. We are looking forward to Wendy’s reopening and being able to once again grab a shake and dog combo for lunch – yum!
